Work zones are among the most dangerous work places. Over 40,000 traffic related injuries and 720 traffic related fatalities occur annually in the United States. High speeds at construction zones are very common and put road workers, who are unable to pay full attention to traffic while working, at increased risk.
The noise and distraction of surrounding machinery, tools and heavy equipment coupled with smoke, steam and dust routine at work sites often obscures the view of both workers and passing drivers. Communities and departments of transportation routinely post police vehicles at work zones and sometimes use a device that shows the speed of the approaching vehicle. These techniques may afford speeding drivers some notice that they are approaching a work zone, but they do nothing to warn workers in the work zone that they may be in danger.
To combat the enhanced risk faced by road workers, Sensys developed the Work Zone Safety System (WZSS). The WZSS, based on our mobile system, enforces speeding violations and also warns drivers approaching vehicles to slow down and sounds the alarm to vulnerable road workers when a dangerously speeding vehicle is approaching the work site.
