Work zone enforcement - Overview

A road working zone is an environment where two conflicting situations co-exist simultaneously. On the one hand there is the car-driver who enters a stretch of road where he must significantly reduce speed, and on the other hand one or several workers operating in a noisy, more-or-less fixed setting, surrounded by machinery, tools and maybe a lane barrier. Depending on the work being carried out, smoke and dust may obscure the view of both workers and passing drivers.

A workplace may perhaps not be occupied by workers throughout the day, which may lead to drivers neglecting the applicable work area speed limit. Although this may be tolerated during off-hours, it will definitely create a dangerous situation should work be in progress.

Road worker safety

A very common method to improve road worker safety is to use a device that shows the speed of an approaching vehicle. This works to a certain extent, but the warning is also often ignored, or sometimes even induces the opposite effect.

SENSYS® has therefore designed a work zone enforcement system, the Road Working Area Safety System (RWASS). It warns drivers for excess speeding, alarms road workers of potentially dangerous situations, and enforces should the speeding driver not adapt to the applicable work area speed limit. The RWASS radar system is non intrusive which means that no devices are buried in the road surface.

Again, the ability of the SENSYS® radar to analyse vehicles' movements enables an accurate decision-making process while the vehicle approaches and an accurate speed measurement should the driver be fined.
