Red-light enforcement - Overview

Red light running creates considerable risk of dangerous intersection collisions and pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to vehicles ignoring the red light signal. Our Red Light Safety System (RLSS) relies on the advanced RS240 to monitor traffic approaching the signal and when it detects a vehicle crossing the stop bar after the light has changed to red, the RLSS captures the violation with two high resolution digital photographs, the first showing vehicle behind the stop bar while the light is red and the second shows the violating vehicle past the stop bar and intruding into the intersection. The system also captures a high resolution image of the vehicle’s license plate. To create 100% picture identification, Sensys also offers a full motion video clip of the violation. This complete evidence package is practically impossible to refuse in court.

The RLSS internal computer uses a proprietary algorithm, comparing the speed of all oncoming vehicles in the enforcement zone against the time that the light is expected to change to red. If the system determines that a vehicle is travelling too fast to stop in time, it takes a high resolution digital photograph of the vehicle just before the stop bar, showing the vehicles position, the red phase of the light and the vehicles license plate. If the vehicle manages to stop before entering the intersection, the event is discarded. If the vehicle does pass illegally into the intersection, the system captures a second digital photograph clearly showing the vehicle passed the stop bar and intruding into the intersection. The second picture may be taken either by the same camera from the rear, or by a second camera located across the intersection. The latter option allows for driver identification should such be required by law.
