Fixed speed enforcement - Overview

Road safety is a universal concern of all governments. Chief among these safety concerns is speeding, which causes thousands of deaths and countless injuries annually. Automated speed enforcement is a key took in a municipality’s arsenal to combat speeding. And the Sensys Speed Safety System (SSS) is the best in the world when it comes to accuracy, dependability and consistency. Positive driver behavior change results from consistent, reliable enforcement.

The Sensys Speed Safety System is based on Sensys’ RS240 multi-tracking radar. This highly advanced wide-beam radar unit is capable of tracking multiple vehicles simultaneously over several lanes for up to 500 feet. Vehicles traveling through the enforcement zone are monitored 20 times per second, their speed and position are precisely determined using Doppler analysis and confirmed using a simple distance over time calculation. If a vehicle is exceeding the predetermined speed, the system takes a high resolution digital photograph of the vehicle and the license plate. This photograph, along with a detailed data bar including the location of the event, the posted speed limit, time, date and vehicle speed form the evidence package that proves the speeding violation. There simply is no more accurate and effective way to enforce speed laws, change driver behavior and save lives.

Speed enforcement history

Shortly after the introduction of the motorcar, it became evident that speed enforcement was required. The wet film speed camera, often referred to as a radar camera although triggered in another way, has helped to enforce speed limits since the end of the Second World War.

Other devices have also since been introduced, but recording photographic evidence based on automated speed enforcement systems is a widely accepted approach for enforcing speed limits.

Sweden's new Life Saver

Numerous reports demonstrate that applying speed enforcement contributes to road safety. The number of casualties is reduced.

In Sweden the non intrusive fixed speed enforcement system, the Speed Safety System (SSS), has been introduced to the public as the new Life Saver, and where statistics also show a positive effect on road safety.

With more than 900 network connected speed enforcement systems installed in Sweden, and SSS installations in six other countries, Sensys is a reliable partner for traffic informatics and traffic safety within the motor vehicle sector.
